El Hierro brief overview
El Hierro is the smallest and calmest of the Canary islands. It has been declared UNESCO Biosphere Reserve some years ago. El Hierro measures only 278 square kilometres, Malpaso, the island’s highest mountain, is 1503 meters high. El Hierro, which is divided into three municipalities, has a population of about 11,000.
Tourism is an important income source. It is characterised by small rural hotels. Most visitors lodge in private country houses.
Climate
The Island’s climate is as different as its vegetation. The coastal areas are usually warm and dry, the middle regions often covered in clouds even in summer and the upper regions hot in summer and cold in winter. It is therefore advisable always to pack bathing suits as well as warm sweaters when exploring the island by car. |
